Freetown, 10th July 2026- The United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations has formally granted Daniel Travis, a seasoned diplomat and career member of the Senior Foreign Service, a Certificate of Demonstrated Competence, clearing the way for his designation as U.S. Ambassador to Sierra Leone.

Travis, who currently serves as Director of the Office of Commercial and Economic Affairs in the Bureau of African Affairs at the Department of State, brings more than 25 years of experience in public diplomacy, trade policy, and national security. His career spans multiple postings across Africa, Europe, and the United States, underscoring his deep expertise in advancing U.S. foreign policy and strengthening international partnerships.

He previously held senior roles, including Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires, ad interim at the U.S. Embassy in the Republic of Congo. His overseas assignments have also taken him to Kenya, Uganda, Hungary, Ghana, and Poland, where he served in public affairs, consular, and economic capacities. Domestically, Travis has worked as a Watch Officer at the State Department’s Operations Center and as senior staff assistant to the Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs.

The Senate committee highlighted Travis’ strategic leadership in African affairs and his strong grasp of trade policy as critical assets for his new role in Sierra Leone. His academic credentials include a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the National War College, where he graduated with honors, and a Bachelor of Arts from California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt. He is fluent in French and Polish.

With Sierra Leone emerging as a key partner in regional security and economic cooperation, Travis’ appointment signals Washington’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and advancing shared interests in governance, trade, and diplomacy.
