Freetown, 24th August, 2026- The European Union has announced a €175,000 emergency aid package to support victims of the devastating floods that swept through Freetown and the Western Area Urban District, leaving behind loss of life, displacement, and extensive damage to homes and infrastructure.
The funding will be channeled through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to deliver targeted assistance to 5,100 people across 27 flood‑affected communities.
The floods have not only disrupted livelihoods but also strained Sierra Leone’s fragile urban economy. With businesses destroyed and families displaced, the EU’s intervention is expected to provide immediate relief while stabilising communities struggling to recover.
The EU’s support will finance:
- Multipurpose cash transfers to help households meet urgent needs.
- Emergency shelter and livelihood recovery for displaced families.
- Clean water, sanitation and hygiene services to prevent disease outbreaks.
- Urgent health support for affected communities.
- Protection assistance for vulnerable groups including women, children, older persons, and persons with disabilities.
In its statement, the EU reaffirmed solidarity with Sierra Leone during this crisis, emphasising that humanitarian aid is not only about compassion but also about safeguarding economic resilience and social stability in disaster‑hit regions.
The intervention highlights the growing role of international partners in cushioning Sierra Leone against climate‑related shocks, while underscoring the urgent need for long‑term investment in resilient infrastructure and disaster preparedness.
