Freetown, 5th May 2026- President Julius Maada Bio has officially relaunched Sierratel in partnership with Africell, signalling a major shift in the country’s telecommunications landscape. The state-owned operator will now function under a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) model, enabling it to deliver voice, data, and mobile money services more efficiently while maintaining full national ownership of its assets.
Government officials say the move is designed to strengthen competition, improve service delivery, and expand access to affordable and reliable connectivity. The partnership also prioritizes innovation, cost reduction, and inclusive digital growth, targeting key groups such as young people, entrepreneurs, and public sector workers.
Authorities have further assured that staff welfare remains a priority, with plans to address outstanding salary issues as part of the transition. The relaunch is widely seen as a bold step toward repositioning Sierratel as a competitive and sustainable player in Sierra Leone’s digital future.
