Freetown, 15th May, 2026 – Sierra Leone’s healthcare transformation gained a major financial boost yesterday as the Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Health, signed a $4.3 million agreement to complete three tertiary hospitals and launch an oxygen production facility in Kerry Town.
Finance Minister Sheku Fantamadi Bangura and Health Minister Dr. Austin Demby formalized the deal in Freetown, signing a Memorandum of Understanding with construction firms and a supervisory consultant to ensure urgent delivery before year‑end.
The funds will accelerate completion of Lumley Government Hospital, Macauley Street Hospital, and Waterloo Government Hospital, while also financing the construction of a modern oxygen plant in Kerry Town. A perimeter fence will be built to secure the Kerry Town site, earmarked for the country’s first Medical City.
The Kerry Town Medical City is designed to anchor Sierra Leone’s long‑term health infrastructure strategy. Plans include: construction of a modern hospital with advanced facilities.
A cancer diagnostic centre – the nation’s first, equipped with state‑of‑the‑art technology from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and a pharma‑grade warehouse supported by the Government, Global Fund, and World Vision.
Minister Bangura emphasized that the $4.3 million investment reflects government’s commitment to mobilizing resources for critical social infrastructure. By prioritizing healthcare financing, Sierra Leone aims to strengthen its capacity to deliver world‑class medical services and reduce reliance on external facilities.
Dr. Demby added that the collaboration between finance and health ministries demonstrates how fiscal policy can directly accelerate healthcare outcomes, ensuring projects are completed on time and to international standards.
