Freetown, 7th May, 2026 — Sierra Leone’s security authorities have confirmed they are investigating reports of a massive cocaine seizure in Spain involving a vessel that departed Freetown late last month. Speaking to Truth Media, National Security Coordinator Abdulai Caulker confirmed a statement from his Office of National Security.

The Arconian, a cargo ship registered in Comoros but reportedly owned by a company in Sierra Leone, was intercepted by Spain’s Guardia Civil on May 1 off Western Sahara. Spanish officials estimate the vessel was carrying between 30 and 45 tonnes of cocaine, potentially the country’s largest-ever drug seizure.

In a statement issued today Thursday, 7th May 2026, the Office of National Security (ONS) said neither the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority nor the Sierra Leone Police had received official communication from Spanish authorities regarding the incident. However, preliminary inquiries and inter-agency assessments are already underway to establish the facts surrounding the vessel, its voyage history, and port movements.

“Investigations are ongoing, and the relevant authorities will undertake all necessary verification processes to determine the full circumstances of the matter,” the statement read.

Authorities assured the public and international partners that Sierra Leone remains committed to combating transnational organised crime and upholding international security standards. The ONS encouraged anyone with credible information to contact the Head of the Criminal Investigation Department on +232 78583069.
