Freetown, 16th July 2026 Two of Sierra Leone’s leading hospitals have received vital equipment and supplies to strengthen healthcare delivery, thanks to the generosity of individual donors.

The Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (PCMH) has been gifted a complete set of gynaecological operating instruments by Dr. Theodore Jarrett, a physician who began his career at PCMH in 1971. Meanwhile, Connaught Hospital’s Ophthalmology Department received a computer monitor, printer, and cartons of printing paper from an anonymous donor.

The official handover ceremony took place at the University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex (USLTHC) office on Percival Street, Freetown, on 14th July 2026.

Dr. Jarrett said his donation was a way of giving back to the institution that launched his medical journey more than five decades ago. The anonymous donor explained that her contribution was inspired by the compassionate and professional care she received at Connaught and was aimed at boosting the department’s administrative efficiency and patient services.

Dr Sonia Spencer, Chairperson of USLTHC, expressed deep appreciation for the gifts, describing them as investments in the future of healthcare in Sierra Leone. “These donations will not only help women in need of specialised gynaecological care, but also support the practical development of our nursing students,” she said. “By working with modern instruments and equipment, our trainees can sharpen their skills and deliver better care in their duties.”

Head of Connaught’s Ophthalmology Department, Dr. Harrison Williams, assured the donors and USLTHC board that the equipment and supplies would be used responsibly and for their intended purposes.

As Sierra Leone continues to strengthen its healthcare system, these acts of generosity stand as powerful reminders of the impact individuals and institutions can make when they come together in the service of healing.
