Freetown, 14th July 2026-

The Government of Sierra Leone has formally discontinued all criminal proceedings against former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, ending months of legal uncertainty surrounding the treason case filed earlier this year.

In a notice submitted to the High Court, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice invoked Section 45 of the Criminal Procedure Act, 2024, exercising the constitutional powers vested in the office to withdraw the charges.

Dr. Koroma had been facing allegations of treason and misprision of treason following investigations into the events surrounding the November 2023 unrest. He was granted bail on medical grounds and has since been receiving treatment abroad.

According to the Attorney-General’s filing, the discontinuance means the case is no longer before the court, and the former president’s bail conditions have been lifted with immediate effect.

“The proceedings are hereby discontinued, and the former President is free to return to Sierra Leone upon completion of his medical treatment or at any time of his choosing,” the notice stated.

The decision marks a significant turn in one of Sierra Leone’s most politically sensitive cases, signalling a possible move toward national reconciliation.
