Freetown, 14th July 2026 –  The National Chairman of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Sir Jimmy Batilo Songa, and Deputy National Chairman Robert K. Kargbo have met with members of the Party’s National Elders Council to discuss recent parliamentary developments relating to former President Ernest Bai Koroma.

The Elders Council, described in the SLPP Constitution as the moral guarantors of the Party, was briefed on engagements between the SLPP parliamentary leadership, the Party Leader, and President Julius Maada Bio. Discussions focused on ensuring that parliamentary and governmental actions remain firmly guided by Sierra Leone’s Constitution, while safeguarding due process, national unity, peace, and stability.

Sir Jimmy underscored the SLPP’s historic role in leading Sierra Leone to independence and later restoring peace after the country’s eleven-year civil war. He noted that the Party’s responsibility to protect democratic governance and strengthen cohesion remains as vital today as ever.

The meeting also reflected on President Bio’s current role as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), highlighting the principles of the ECOWAS Revised Treaty and the Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which promote constitutional order and peaceful resolution of political differences.

The Elders Council encouraged SLPP members at home and abroad to continue supporting President Bio’s efforts to foster peace, unity, and inclusive national dialogue. Sir Jimmy reaffirmed the President’s longstanding commitment to reconciliation, recalling his engagement with rebel leader Foday Sankoh during the peace process that helped end the civil war.

“History will judge every leader by the legacy they leave behind,” Sir Jimmy said, expressing hope that President Bio will be remembered for his dedication to peace, democratic governance, and national progress.
