Freetown, 11th June, 2026 The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has announced the receipt of its annual government subvention for 2026, amounting to SLE 2.7 million.

The subvention, first pledged by President Julius Maada Bio in 2018 as part of his commitment to media development, has since been delivered annually and subjected to independent audits by the Audit Service Sierra Leone. SLAJ says the funds are vital for sustaining operations across national and regional levels, strengthening affiliate bodies, and advancing key initiatives such as journalist safety and press freedom advocacy.

SLAJ emphasized that its elected officials serve voluntarily and do not draw salaries from the subvention. The Association also addressed recurring public concerns about independence, stressing that it is not a media house and does not control editorial policies or content.

“Our strategic partnership with government is focused solely on strengthening the media sector, enhancing professionalism, and promoting ethical journalism,” SLAJ stated. “This does not compromise our role in defending press freedom, advocating for journalist safety, and holding institutions to account.”

The Association reaffirmed its integrity and independence, noting that while SLAJ creates an enabling environment for journalists, it is the responsibility of media houses to investigate, report, and speak truth to power. Membership remains voluntary, reflecting the diversity and strength of Sierra Leone’s media landscape.

SLAJ expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Information and Civic Education and the Ministry of Finance for continuing the support, while reassuring the public of its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the public good.
