Freetown, 6th February 2026- Sky Bar has launched a major cleanup of its beachfront property in Lumley following warnings from the National Tourist Board (NTB that the venue would face closure if it failed to meet sanitation standards.
On Thursday, workers were seen clearing debris and restoring the beachfront behind Sky Bar. The move comes after NTB officials ordered management to establish a daily cleaning team by Friday, stressing that failure to comply would result in closure orders next week.
Although the owner of Sky Bar is reportedly out of town, NTB emphasized that the obligation to maintain cleanliness remains binding. The Board has vowed to continue monitoring the site to ensure compliance.
The cleanup was triggered by a recent inspection led by Mr. Bah, acting on behalf of NTB General Manager Madam Carew. During the walkthrough, Bah described the beachfront as “absolutely filthy and far below acceptable standards.”
The findings were immediately reported to NTB leadership, which issued a directive requiring Sky Bar to put in place a daily cleaning system. The ultimatum followed sustained advocacy from Trevor Young, a digital creator and founder of Sierra Leone to the Top, who has been actively engaged in regular beach cleaning activities along the Lumley–Aberdeen stretch.
Young’s efforts have drawn attention to the deteriorating state of the beach and helped push authorities to hold establishments accountable for maintaining public spaces.
NTB has announced that additional inspections will be carried out at other beachfront establishments to ensure compliance. Officials stressed that Lumley–Aberdeen Beach, one of Sierra Leone’s most visited tourist attractions, “must be clean, and stay clean.”
With Sky Bar now taking visible steps to clean its beachfront, attention turns to whether the venue will maintain the required standards in the long term. The Tourist Board has promised continued monitoring, while activists like Trevor Young remain committed to ensuring Sierra Leone’s coastline is protected and preserved.
