New York, 21st July, 2026 – Sierra Leone has reaffirmed its commitment to safer roads worldwide as the Executive Director of the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA), James Bagie Bio, joined 162 UN Member States in adopting a landmark resolution to cut global road traffic deaths and injuries by half by 2030.
The resolution, titled “Political Declaration of the High‑Level Meeting on Improving Global Road Safety”, passed overwhelmingly at the United Nations General Assembly, with only one country voting against and none abstaining.
Speaking at the Assembly, Mr. Bio underscored Sierra Leone’s determination to fully implement laws and policies that enhance road safety, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 3.6 and the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030. He credited President Julius Maada Bio’s leadership for driving national efforts to protect road users.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility,” Mr. Bio declared. “Sierra Leone is unwavering in its commitment to halving road traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030 and beyond. Together, let us honor the promise of safer roads, safer vehicles, and safer road users for today and future generations.”
The resolution calls on governments to strengthen road safety education, enforce accountability in infrastructure projects, and ensure that transport development meets minimum safety standards. It also emphasizes community awareness and health literacy as key tools in reducing risks.
For Sierra Leone, the vote marks another milestone in its role as an active partner in advancing international road safety objectives, reinforcing the country’s growing reputation as a champion of global public safety.
