Freetown, 8th May 2026- Tambakula Wharf in Aberdeen came alive with song, dance and celebration as GOAL Sierra Leone officially launched the Ecowave Fish Market and handed it over to local fishmongers.
The newly constructed market is designed to provide a cleaner, safer environment for fish preservation and sales, marking a significant step in transforming livelihoods along Freetown’s coastline.
Speaking at the ceremony, James Riak, Country Director of GOAL SL, reflected on the hurdles faced during the project’s journey.
“Finding land was a challenge, and progress did not always come smoothly. There were moments when giving up seemed easier,” Riak admitted. “But it came alive because of partnership and the support of Sierra Leoneans.”
He extended heartfelt thanks to donor Sean Curran, whose contribution made the completion possible. Riak described the support as “life-changing and long-lasting,” emphasizing that the project was not just about opening a market but “opening doors of opportunity and a sustainable future for many families.”
The EcowaveFish Market boasts over 40 stalls, prioritizing fisher groups and women vendors. It is equipped with solar-powered freezers to reduce post-harvest losses, clean water and sanitation facilities, solar lighting to improve safety (especially for women), and processing facilities to boost incomes. Training for 200 fisherfolk is also part of the package, ensuring skills for the future.
Delivering the keynote address, Deputy Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Jonathan Titus Williams, urged the community to take ownership of the facility.
“This market belongs to the people of Tambakula. Its success will depend on your collective commitment to maintaining it, upholding high standards, and promoting responsible fishing practices that preserve our marine resources for future generations,” he said.
Women vendors, who form the backbone of the fish trade, expressed their gratitude through jubilant singing and dancing. Fatmata Bangura, Chairlady of Tambakula Wharf, thanked GOAL SL and its partners, promising to maintain and sustain the facility.
The event concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a guided tour of the new market, a symbol of resilience, partnership, and community empowerment.
