Freetown, 17th July 2026- Former President Ernest Bai Koroma is expected to attend the ECOWAS Summit this weekend, following the state’s decision to discontinue treason-related charges against him, a move unanimously endorsed by parliament on Thursday, 16 July 2026.

According to credible sources, the decision forms part of a broader effort at “goodwill, confidence building, and healing” within the nation.

Koroma’s presence at the regional gathering is expected to symbolize a new chapter of reconciliation, signalling Sierra Leone’s commitment to strengthening unity at home while engaging constructively with West Africa’s leadership.

In addition to discontinuing charges, Parliament moved further to enshrine reconciliation and welfare measures into law, It Welfare of former leaders. “This Honourable House promulgates a Government or Private Member’s Bill into law to safeguard the welfare of Former Presidents and Vice Presidents.”

Support for service families – That this Honourable House urges Government to support the families of those service men and women who were impaired or lost their lives during the tragic incident of 26 November 2023, in sacrifice to uphold the National Security of the State.

Resolution drafting – That the Clerk of Parliament drafts a resolution in this regard, approved by this House, and the same be served on His Excellency the President of the Republic.

This combined development, Koroma’s attendance at the ECOWAS Summit and Parliament’s sweeping resolution underscores Sierra Leone’s dual commitment to national healing and regional cooperation.
