Freetown, 5th August 2026- Governance specialist and politician Dr. Ibrahim Bangura has appealed to Members of Parliament to place national interest above partisan considerations as deliberations continue on the Constitution of Sierra Leone (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
Speaking during Tuesday’s session in the Well of Parliament, Dr. Bangura stressed the importance of consensus in shaping reforms that could redefine Sierra Leone’s democratic future.
“We hope that the two parties will come to a decision that will serve in the best interest of the people of Sierra Leone,” he said.
The Bill seeks to amend key provisions of the 1991 Constitution, introducing reforms aimed at strengthening governance and promoting national development. The debate has drawn wide attention, with MPs from both sides of the aisle weighing in on proposals that could have lasting implications for the country’s political institutions.
Dr. Bangura’s intervention adds to mounting calls for unity and compromise as Parliament navigates one of the most consequential legislative exercises in recent years. The tone of the debate will be critical in determining whether reforms are embraced as a collective national project or become mired in political division.
Parliament is expected to continue deliberations in the coming days before deciding on the next stage of the legislative process.
