Freetown, 31st August 2026- The All People’s Congress (APC), Sierra Leone’s main opposition party, has filed a legal challenge at the Supreme Court following the Speaker of Parliament’s controversial decision on August 10, 2026, to declare the Constitution Amendment Bill, 2025, passed.
In its filing, the APC argues that the ruling was unlawful, insisting that the government did not meet the constitutional threshold required for such a vote. Party representatives maintain that the Speaker’s declaration ignored the fact that opposition MPs had staged a walkout, leaving the government side without the numbers to secure the two‑thirds majority mandated by the Constitution.
The APC’s legal team, acting on behalf of Hon. Abdul Kargo MP and Hon. Daniel Koroma MP, has named the Speaker of Parliament, the Attorney‑General, and the Clerk of Parliament as defendants in the case.
“This position is illegal,” the party stated, stressing that constitutional safeguards must be respected. “Those who hold power under the Constitution must submit to the Constitution. We stand for constitutional supremacy.”
The case now places the Supreme Court at the center of a high‑stakes dispute over parliamentary procedure and constitutional integrity. Its ruling will determine whether the Speaker’s August 10 decision stands and could set a precedent for how future constitutional amendments are handled in Sierra Leone’s legislature.
