Freetown, 15th July 2026- The All Peoples Congress (APC) has once again rescheduled its constituency elections, citing security and logistical concerns linked to Sierra Leone’s upcoming hosting of the ECOWAS Summit.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Secretariat, the APC confirmed that the elections, which were initially slated for Saturday, 18 July 2026, will now commence on Saturday, 25 July 2026 across the country.
The decision follows a high-level meeting held on Monday, 13 July 2026, involving the Office of National Security (ONS), the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC), and the APC leadership. During the meeting, the ONS advised that it would not be prudent to conduct the elections on the original date due to heightened security and logistical demands associated with the regional summit.
“In the interest of national security, public order, and responsible democratic engagement, the National Secretariat has accepted this request,” the party said, stressing that the postponement was initiated by the ONS and not by the APC itself.
The Secretariat acknowledged the inconvenience caused to members, delegates, aspirants, and party officials who had already made preparations for the polls. It appealed for patience and understanding, noting that the adjustment was necessary to safeguard peace and stability during a period of heightened national activity.
Despite the delay, the APC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair, transparent, and credible constituency elections. The party urged its members to remain calm, disciplined, and united, emphasizing that the rescheduling was in the national interest.
The ECOWAS Summit, which Sierra Leone is set to host, has prompted increased security measures across Freetown and beyond, with authorities prioritizing safety and order during the high-profile regional gathering.
