Freetown, 14th April, 2026 – The MEPS Trust Well Woman Clinic has launched a mammogram machine, a specialized low-dose X-ray imaging system designed for breast cancer screening and diagnosis, marking an important step forward in the fight against breast cancer in Sierra Leone.
The Minister of Health, Dr Austin Demby, lauded MEPS trust well woman clinic for such achievement, citing that the machine is crucial for early detection of breast cancer, also noting that early detection saves lives. He said that the government would find a way to support the MEPS trust well woman clinic.
Minister Demby noted that there is a brand-new mammogram machine coming to Sierra Leone in a few weeks. He also emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening systems for improving cancer diagnosis and treatment in Sierra Leone.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer MEPS Trust Well Woman Clinic, Jennifer Renner-Thomas, said that the mammogram machine is a 20-year-old dream that had become a reality through the support and collaboration with the Haematology and Cancer Untold Inc. (HACU) and other partners.
Jennifer revealed that over two decades, the MEPS Trust Well Woman Clinic had reached more than 130,000 women and families. “The goal is to ensure that women in Sierra Leone have access to quality, compassionate and life-saving healthcare,” she said.
She also noted that over 20 years, the MEPS Trust Well Woman Clinic had reached over 130,000 women and families through advocacy, awareness, screening and support for treatment. She expressed her passion for humanity despite the many challenges that the institution deals with.
Jennifer acknowledged the government’s support, humanitarian organizations and other development partners. The event brought together key stakeholders, partners and survivors of breast cancer.
