Freetown, 8th April, 2026 The Court of Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU) has announced the interim suspension of Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Dr. Philip John Kanu (Assoc. Prof.), following allegations of irregularities in staff recruitment.

In a statement issued from the Chancellor’s Office, the University confirmed that the decision was taken after reviewing the findings of a Sub-Committee set up to investigate the recruitment process. The report, according to officials, highlighted serious concerns that warranted immediate action.

Acting under Section 15(1)(a) of the Universities Act No. 5 of 2021, and in consultation with the Minister as prescribed in Section 7(2)(d), the Court determined that suspending Dr. Kanu was necessary “in the best interest of the University” pending the conclusion of administrative and disciplinary proceedings.

The suspension order requires Dr. Kanu to hand over all official duties, responsibilities, and university property to Dr. Mohamed Ali, who will oversee operations during the interim period. The directive also cautions Dr. Kanu against undertaking any official functions or attempting to influence staff or processes connected to the ongoing investigation.

University authorities stressed that the measure was taken without prejudice to Dr. Kanu’s right to be heard and to make representations before the Court regarding the findings and recommendations of the investigative report.

The development marks a significant moment for Milton Margai Technical University, which has been undergoing reforms under the Universities Act. Stakeholders say the suspension underscores the institution’s commitment to accountability and transparency in its governance structures.
