Accra, 30th June, 2026 — Following torrential rains that battered Accra on June 29, causing widespread destruction across several communities, the Sierra Leone High Commission in Ghana has moved swiftly to ensure the safety of Sierra Leonean nationals living in the city.

High Commissioner Mohamed Hassan Kaisamba, working in partnership with the Sierra Leone Community in Ghana, led by interim head Adams Jah, coordinated checks on Sierra Leoneans to confirm their wellbeing and gather firsthand updates from affected areas.

Most citizens contacted were reported safe. However, one elderly Sierra Leonean woman and her family in Bawdjiase, New Market Road suffered severe damage when floodwaters broke through their fence and inundated their home, destroying property. The family was successfully rescued and relocated to safety, now residing with another Sierra Leonean household thanks to the combined efforts of the High Commission and the community.

In a statement, High Commissioner Kaisamba expressed solidarity with Ghana and extended Sierra Leone’s deepest sympathies to the government and people of Ghana. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones and with all those whose homes, livelihoods, and personal belongings have been affected by this unfortunate disaster,” he said.

He commended Ghana’s government, emergency response agencies, security services, volunteers, and humanitarian organizations for their swift and tireless rescue and recovery efforts.

The High Commission reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to stand with Ghana as a longstanding partner, pledging continued cooperation with authorities and stakeholders. “Through compassion and collaboration, affected communities will recover and emerge stronger,” Kaisamba emphasized.
