Freetown, 2nd October, 2026 — Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) Deputy National Chairman Robert Kondema Kargbo has assumed the role of Acting National Chairman following the temporary absence of National Chairman Sir Jimmy Batilo Songa.

Kargbo received a formal handing-over note from Songa on Friday, October 2, entrusting him with responsibility for overseeing the affairs of the governing party during the National Chairman’s absence from the country.

In a statement following the handover, Kargbo said he accepted the responsibility with “humility and a deep sense of duty,” pledging to work in consultation with the party’s National Executive, elected representatives, grassroots structures and wider membership.

He said his immediate focus would be to ensure continuity, unity and the smooth functioning of the party, while adhering to the SLPP Constitution and established principles.

“I assure the National Chairman, the National Executive, our elected representatives, grassroots structures, membership, and supporters that I will discharge this responsibility to the best of my ability, with dedication, fairness, discipline, and strict adherence to the Constitution,” Kargbo said.

The temporary leadership arrangement comes as the SLPP continues to focus on strengthening its internal structures and preparing for the next electoral cycle. The party has recently been engaged in discussions on internal electoral processes and preparations ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Following the handover, Kargbo also held a meeting with a cross-section of SLPP councillors serving in the Freetown City Council (FCC), in what he described as a constructive engagement focused on strengthening collaboration at the local level.

According to Kargbo, the meeting provided an opportunity to discuss issues of common interest and consider ways of advancing the party’s work within the local governance structure.

He described the discussions with the councillors as “constructive” and “cordial,” while commending them for their contributions and commitment to the party.

The engagement with FCC councillors underscores the importance of maintaining coordination between the party’s national leadership and its grassroots and local government structures as Kargbo assumes the temporary leadership role.

Kargbo said he looked forward to working closely with the wider party leadership and membership during the period, stressing the need for unity and collective effort.

The SLPP, which is led by President Julius Maada Bio, has in recent months placed emphasis on party unity, discipline, grassroots engagement and organisational preparedness as it looks ahead to 2028.
