Freetown, 3rd June 2026- President Donald Trump has nominated career diplomat Daniel Travis to serve as the next United States Ambassador to the Republic of Sierra Leone. The nomination was formally submitted to the U.S. Senate in June, according to a statement released by the White House

Travis, a native of California, is a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Counsellor. If confirmed, he will hold the title of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Sierra Leone.

The appointment comes as Washington seeks to fill the vacancy left by Ambassador Bryan David Hunt. Since Hunt’s departure, the U.S. Embassy in Freetown has been overseen on an interim basis by Chargé d’Affaires Jared Yancey.

The White House announcement underscores the administration’s intent to strengthen diplomatic engagement with Sierra Leone at a time of growing cooperation in governance, economic development, and regional security.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Freetown has confirmed that no embassy or consulate closures have been announced and that operations continue as normal.

“The Department of State is constantly evaluating its overseas operations to advance America’s priorities as efficiently and effectively as possible. We have nothing further to announce at this time,” the Embassy said in an official statement.

It added that any updates to the visa application or interview process would be shared directly with affected applicants and published on the Embassy’s website.
