Freetown, 6th August 2026 – The National Youth Commission of Sierra Leone (NAYCOM) has marked one year of Commissioner Joseph Maada Lahai’s leadership, highlighting significant strides in youth empowerment and institutional growth.
Speaking at a ceremony held at NAYCOM’s Conference Room in New England Ville, Freetown, Commissioner Lahai described his tenure as “transformational leadership advancing institutional achievements for youth development.” He revealed that within his first year in office, the Commission has supported 4,000 young people with grants, half of the 8,000 target beneficiaries set before his appointment.
Director of Research, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Yusuf S. Kamara, outlined the Commission’s strategic focus areas, which include mental health and well-being initiatives, HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns, sexual and reproductive health rights, drug abuse prevention programs, and civic education activities. “We have successfully implemented all these strategic areas,” Kamara emphasized.
Board Chairman Saidu Allie Lakoh commended the Commission’s leadership and praised the board for maintaining peace and stability throughout the years.
NAYCOM’s broader commitment, officials noted, remains anchored on inclusive policies, quality skills development, employment creation, entrepreneurship, civil engagement, and evidence-based decision-making. Youth employment remains a central priority, with ongoing programs designed to expand opportunities and enhance the livelihoods of Sierra Leone’s young population.
As the Commission celebrates its first anniversary under Lahai’s stewardship, the achievements signal a renewed commitment to tackling unemployment and strengthening youth participation in national development.
