Freetown, 26th February 2026 – The Mano River Union (MRU) Secretariat has called for calm and diplomatic engagement following reports of recent developments along the Sierra Leone–Guinea border, specifically in Falaba District and Faranah Prefecture.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Secretariat said it is closely monitoring the situation and has begun consultations with local authorities and stakeholders in affected border communities. These engagements, it noted, are intended to establish the facts on the ground and provide a basis for constructive dialogue.
The MRU emphasized that its actions are guided by the 15th Protocol on Peace, Security and Defence, which mandates the promotion of peace, security, and regional stability among member states.
“The Secretariat is engaging the Governments of Sierra Leone and Guinea to encourage restraint and reliance on established diplomatic and bilateral mechanisms to address the matter peacefully and in a spirit of cooperation,” the statement read.
The MRU reaffirmed its readiness to support ongoing efforts aimed at de-escalation and the preservation of cordial relations between the two countries, describing Sierra Leone and Guinea as “sisterly Member States” with shared interests in regional harmony.
The Secretariat also underscored its commitment to helping member states resolve cross-border issues through dialogue, confidence-building, and collaborative solutions, stressing that peace and cooperation remain central to the Union’s mission.
