Freetown, 2nd  December 2025 — Sierra Leone’s judiciary has announced sweeping new measures to combat the illegal production, distribution, and use of drugs, issuing a practice direction that will significantly tighten the handling of drug-related cases across the country.

The directive, signed by the Chief Justice and communicated to the Attorney General, the Director of Public Prosecutions, judges, magistrates, and court officials, comes into effect immediately and will remain in force until further notice.

Among the key provisions include: No bail will be granted to defendants charged under the National Drugs Control Act, 2008, except in strict accordance with Section 76(1) of the Criminal Procedure Act, 2024; speedy trials will be prioritized for all drug-related matters and courts handling such cases may sit on Saturdays to fast-track proceedings.

Other provisions include instructions that defendants found guilty will face custodial sentences, with those convicted under Section 7(a–c) of the Act receiving not less than 30 years in prison. And all drug-related charges will be concluded in the High Court.

The announcement underscores Sierra Leone’s broader commitment to strengthening its legal framework against drug trafficking and abuse, aligning with national and international efforts to safeguard communities and uphold the rule of law.
