Freetown, 8th May, 2026 — The Sierra Leone Immigration Department (SLID) has withdrawn a controversial directive issued earlier this week and clarified the requirements for airlines operating at Freetown International Airport regarding non-national passengers.

In a statement signed by Chief Immigration Officer Moses Tiffa Baio, SLID emphasized that entry procedures remain unchanged for incoming passengers. Those requiring visas must continue to obtain them under existing regulations, while visa-free and visa-on-arrival arrangements are unaffected.

However, the department stressed that non-national passengers claiming residence in Sierra Leone must present a valid Biometric Residence Permit. If unavailable, a valid visa will be required.

For outgoing passengers, airlines have been encouraged to verify residence permits before check-in and boarding. According to SLID, this measure is intended to minimize delays, ensure compliance, and support smoother airport operations.

The clarification comes after confusion sparked by a letter dated May 7, 2026, from the Head of Immigration at Freetown International Airport, which attempted to shift verification responsibilities onto airline staff. That directive has now been formally withdrawn.

Baio thanked airlines for their cooperation, noting that the updated guidance supersedes the earlier communication.
