Freetown, 1oth March, 2026 – The Fullah Progressive Union (FPU), in partnership with the Fullah Tribal Administration, has donated 1,050 bags of rice worth over Le500,000 to support Muslims across Sierra Leone during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
Speaking at the FPU headquarters in Freetown, President of the Union, Alhaji Umaru Sanu Barrie, described the annual gesture as both Zakat and economic relief. “Today is indeed a big and memorable day for us at the Fullah Progressive Union. Since 2019, we have continued this tradition, and we pray Allah gives us the strength to sustain it. This support is not limited to Fullahs alone but extends to other ethnic groups who have benefited significantly,” Barrie said.
He expressed gratitude to partners at home and abroad, particularly contributors from the diaspora. “Those in Georgia are doing extremely well. We appreciate all who have supported this vision and hope to see even more contributions in the coming years,” he added.
Beneficiaries welcomed the donation with heartfelt appreciation. “We can barely afford a bag of rice at this time. May God bless the givers,” said Mamie Moriba from Aberdeen. A lactating mother described the gesture as “timely and thoughtful.”
Representing the Georgia Chapter, Dr. Alphajor Charm reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the initiative. “We know the importance of this lifeline and will continue to stand with the FPU and the tribal head in giving alms,” he said.
Beyond Ramadan, the FPU has also been active in promoting education and business development across Sierra Leone. According to Barrie, this reflects the Union’s broader vision: “We care not only about our faith and culture but also believe education is everyone’s business, and we will continue to support it.”
The donation underscores the FPU’s growing role in community support, blending faith, charity, and social responsibility to uplift Sierra Leoneans during Ramadan and beyond.
