Freetown, 15th October 2026- The Angel Care Foundation will launch its Angel Blanket Initiative in Sierra Leone on Thursday, 22 October 2026, at the New Brookfields Hotel in Freetown, as the organisation expands its efforts to promote maternal and newborn wellbeing across Africa.
The launch, scheduled for 10:00 a.m., will bring together public institutions, healthcare providers, diplomatic missions, businesses and development partners to explore collaboration in delivering the initiative locally.
Founded in 2020 by Dr. Olivia Tchanque, the US-based philanthropic organisation works across community health, water and sanitation, education, and humanitarian assistance. Its flagship initiative aims to distribute one million blankets to newborns across Africa over five years, providing warmth, dignity and essential postnatal health information to families.
Sierra Leone becomes the second country to welcome the initiative following its launch in Accra, Ghana, on 25 June 2026.
Beyond providing soft, 100 per cent cotton blankets to mothers and their newborns at hospital discharge, the initiative also includes educational materials on newborn care, danger signs, and postnatal care for mothers. The programme is designed to support a dignified beginning for every newborn while raising awareness of maternal and child health needs through participating healthcare facilities.
The Freetown launch is expected to establish a network of local partners to support blanket distribution, health education and community outreach. Angel Care Foundation invites organisations to contribute through financial assistance, healthcare partnerships, logistics, supplies, communications, and institutional collaboration. Specific distribution targets and participating health facilities will be confirmed in consultation with local implementation partners. The initiative is guided by the theme, “One Blanket. One Baby. One Message of Unity.”
