Freetown, 9th September 2026 – The Government of Sierra Leone has procured US$2.5 million worth of sexual and reproductive health (SRHR) drugs and essential commodities, a major boost for maternal and child health services nationwide.
The consignment, now stored at the National Medical Supplies Agency (NMSA), includes medicines and supplies critical for Caesarean sections, normal deliveries, and emergency care. Distribution to health facilities across the country is expected to begin immediately.
“This investment demonstrates Government’s continued commitment to protecting critical health services for women, children, and families across Sierra Leone,” said Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby.
The procurement is aligned with the country’s 300 Days of Activism for Triple Zeros campaign, which targets zero maternal deaths, zero child deaths, and zero unmet need for family planning. Data show that high blood pressure, malaria, post‑partum bleeding, and sepsis remain leading causes of maternal and child mortality. The newly acquired medicines are tailored to address these conditions.
Officials confirmed that the distribution of supplies will be tracked from NMSA stores to health facilities as part of strict accountability measures designed to prevent misuse or diversion.
The investment will strengthen Sierra Leone’s reproductive health system, reduce preventable deaths, and improve confidence in public health facilities.
