Freetown, 5th August, 2026 – A routine fishing expedition turned into a dramatic life‑saving mission when the Chinese vessel YuanYu 708 rescued five Sierra Leonean fishermen from a sinking boat in treacherous seas.
Heavy rains and rough waves had overwhelmed the local craft, leaving the fishermen clinging desperately for survival without life‑saving equipment. Spotting distress signals during a routine watch, Captain Wang Pingchao immediately suspended fishing operations and steered his vessel at full speed toward the scene.
By the time the crew arrived, the boat had already gone under. The five men were struggling in open waters, exposed to hypothermia and drowning. The YuanYu 708 crew swiftly activated emergency rescue procedures, deploying life‑saving equipment and pulling all five survivors aboard.
