Freetown, 24th March, 2026 – The National Chairman of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Sir Jimmy Batilo Songa, has called for urgent collaboration between the Minister of Works and Public Assets, Dr. Denis Sandi, and SLPP councillors to restore functional governance in Freetown.
The appeal comes amid a governance paralysis triggered by the ongoing boycott of council activities by the City Mayor and All People’s Congress (APC) councillors. Their absence has stalled service delivery and disrupted operations in the capital, leaving residents frustrated.
Speaking after a high-level engagement with the Minister of Works, Sir Jimmy stressed that the SLPP cannot allow the city to remain in limbo. He urged government ministries and agencies to act swiftly, empowering SLPP councillors to carry out their statutory duties and ensure the council continues to function.
To stabilize the situation, the SLPP Chairman proposed a set of immediate measures, including a monthly engagement session between councillors, the Minister, and local government stakeholders to align priorities. A structured leadership framework to streamline decision-making and accountability.
He also mentioned closer collaboration with ministries to secure resources and technical support and platforms for delivery, giving councillors the authority and funding to implement projects that benefit residents.
“The SLPP remains committed to good governance, service delivery, and the prosperity of Freetown,” Sir Jimmy said, adding that the party stands ready to lead by example. He called on all patriotic citizens to rally behind efforts to restore effective council operations.
With the boycott continuing to paralyze city governance, the SLPP leadership’s intervention marks a decisive attempt to reassert control and reassure residents that service delivery will not be abandoned.
