Freetown, 16th March 2026 – The Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, alongside the leadership of the National Tourist Board, has unveiled key outcomes from Sierra Leone’s participation at ITB Berlin 2026, the world’s largest and most influential travel trade exhibition.

Speaking during a press conference held shortly after the delegation’s return, the Minister described the country’s presence at the global tourism event as both strategic and impactful, noting that the engagements in Berlin have significantly strengthened Sierra Leone’s visibility within the European travel market.

The briefing brought together officials from the Ministry and the National Tourist Board who shared insights into the high-level meetings, partnerships, and opportunities generated during the international event.

In her opening remarks, the Minister expressed appreciation to members of the ITB 2026 delegation for their dedication and professionalism in representing Sierra Leone on the global stage. She noted that their efforts contributed greatly to showcasing the country’s tourism potential to international stakeholders.

While commending the delegation, the Minister emphasized that the success of Sierra Leone’s tourism sector requires collective national effort. She therefore called on the media to play a more proactive role in shaping and promoting the country’s tourism narrative.

“Our success internationally must be supported by a strong domestic narrative,” the Minister said. “The media has an important role to play in amplifying our story. By highlighting our culture, heritage, and the many positive developments taking place across the tourism sector, you help build the confidence that international visitors need when choosing Sierra Leone as a destination.”

She further stressed that participation in ITB Berlin is not merely ceremonial but forms a critical pillar of Sierra Leone’s long-term tourism development strategy. According to the Minister, the global travel trade fair provides a platform for countries to connect directly with investors, travel operators, and media outlets that shape international travel trends.

The Minister also identified Germany as one of Sierra Leone’s most important source markets for tourism, explaining that German travelers have historically shown strong interest in destinations that promote sustainable tourism, cultural heritage, and adventure travel experiences.

“Sierra Leone possesses many of the qualities that travelers from Germany and across Europe seek,” she noted. “From our pristine beaches and wildlife to our vibrant cultural traditions and historical heritage, we have a unique offering that stands out in the global tourism landscape.”

Providing a detailed breakdown of the delegation’s engagements, the General Manager of the National Tourist Board highlighted several high-level business-to-business (B2B) meetings held during the event. These discussions involved international tour operators, destination marketers, travel writers, and tourism investors interested in exploring Sierra Leone as a new and emerging destination.

According to the General Manager, one of the most significant engagements during the exhibition was a meeting with representatives from National Geographic, a globally respected media platform known for promoting travel destinations with strong environmental and cultural value.

The engagement, he explained, could potentially position Sierra Leone more prominently among high-end travelers, eco-tourists, and nature enthusiasts who follow the platform for authentic travel experiences.

“These engagements are extremely important for the future of our tourism industry,” the General Manager said. “When we interact with platforms like National Geographic and major tour operators, we are essentially planting the seeds for future tourism arrivals. These partnerships help tell Sierra Leone’s story to audiences that appreciate authenticity, natural beauty, and cultural richness.”

Another key highlight shared during the press conference was the overwhelming interest generated around Sierra Leone’s upcoming Reggae Festival. The festival was promoted during ITB Berlin as a flagship cultural event capable of attracting international visitors and strengthening the country’s cultural tourism offering.

According to the National Tourist Board, the event captured the attention of several international tourism stakeholders who expressed interest in attending the festival and potentially organizing travel groups to Sierra Leone during the event period.

Officials believe that with proper planning and promotion, the Reggae Festival could grow into a major international cultural attraction that draws visitors from across Africa, Europe, and the global African diaspora.

“The level of interest we received for the Reggae Festival was extremely encouraging,” the General Manager explained. “Events like this have the power to bring people together while showcasing the richness of our culture, music, and hospitality.”

The Ministry also emphasized that the work does not end with participation in global exhibitions. According to the Minister, the next phase involves following up on the leads and partnerships established during ITB Berlin to ensure that they translate into tangible opportunities for Sierra Leone’s tourism industry.

This includes strengthening relationships with international travel operators, securing promotional opportunities on global platforms, and encouraging travel writers and influencers to experience Sierra Leone firsthand.

The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to building a resilient and competitive tourism sector that contributes meaningfully to national development and economic growth.

“As we move forward, our focus is on converting the interest generated in Berlin into real tourism arrivals, investment opportunities, and economic benefits for the people of Sierra Leone,” she said.

She concluded by reaffirming the Ministry’s dedication to positioning Sierra Leone as a must-visit destination in West Africa while continuing to work closely with industry stakeholders, development partners, and the media to elevate the country’s global tourism profile.
