Freetown, 13th February 2026- Hon. Chernor Ramadan Maju Bah, popularly known as Chericoco, has issued an appeal for fairness and restraint in Sierra Leone’s political process, following recent developments involving the All People’s Congress (APC).
In a statement titled “A Call for Fairness, Restraint, and Respect for Democratic Space”, the former lawmaker and lawyer expressed concern over the suspension of the APC by the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC), the heavy fines imposed on the party, and the arrest and remand of APC Secretary General Lansana Dumbuya at Pademba Road Correctional Facility.
“The APC complied with the fines because we respect the law and the institutions established to uphold it,” Chericoco said.
“It is therefore deeply concerning that, despite this compliance, the situation has escalated in ways that raise serious questions about fairness, proportionality, and the protection of Sierra Leone’s democratic space.”
Chericoco underscored his belief in the rule of law, but warned against its misuse.
“As a lawyer and former lawmaker, I have always believed in the rule of law and the importance of strong, independent institutions. But the law must never be perceived or used as a tool for political intimidation. Institutions must not appear to weaken legitimate opposition voices.”
He stressed that Sierra Leone’s democratic progress depends on “fairness, equal treatment, and unwavering respect for constitutional principles.”
While acknowledging the independence of the judiciary, Chericoco urged state institutions to act with neutrality and integrity.
“Good governance requires institutions that safeguard democratic participation, not restrict it,” he said. Chericoco also directed his message to APC members and supporters at home and abroad.
“To APC members and supporters across Sierra Leone and the diaspora, I call for calm, discipline, and unity. Let us remain focused, principled, and committed to peace.”
He concluded by reaffirming the APC’s commitment to democratic values:
“The APC will continue to stand firm in defense of democracy, good governance, and the rule of law as we work toward a better future for all Sierra Leoneans.”
