Freetown, 3rd November 2025-  The Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources (MMMR) and the National Minerals Agency (NMA) have issued a joint statement addressing widespread reports of an alleged mining incident in Kumoroh, Nimikoro Chiefdom, Kono District. While social media and community accounts have suggested a possible loss of life, authorities say no such incident has been officially confirmed.

“We understand the public concern and grief surrounding these reports,” the statement reads. “However, investigations are still ongoing, and at this time, there is no verified evidence of any fatalities.”

According to the MMMR and NMA, those reportedly involved in the incident were engaged in illegal mining—operating outside the bounds of safety regulations and national mining laws. The agencies emphasized that repeated warnings and community engagements have been conducted in the area, urging residents to abandon unsafe and unauthorized mining practices.

Despite these efforts, officials say illegal miners have continued to defy orders and resist enforcement actions.

The government’s response to the situation has involved a multi-agency approach, with the Environment Protection Agency (EPA), Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), Office of National Security (ONS), District Security Committee (DISEC), and the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) all working in coordination to monitor and address illegal mining activities in the region.

Authorities also moved to dispel misinformation circulating about the alleged incident, urging the public to await verified updates. “We remain committed to transparency and will continue to inform the public as investigations progress,” the statement added.

The MMMR and NMA reiterated their call for residents to refrain from illegal mining, citing the dangers it poses not only to individual lives but also to community safety, national security, and the environment.

“We assure the public of our continued vigilance and collaboration with all relevant stakeholders to eradicate illegal mining across the country,” the statement concluded.

As the investigation continues, the government is urging calm, cooperation, and a renewed commitment to lawful and sustainable mining practices
