Freetown, 23rd October 2025- Sierra Leone’s National Task Force on Drug-Related Substances convened a high-level meeting today at the National Public Health Agency (NPHA) headquarters in Wilberforce, reaffirming its commitment to expanding rehabilitation services for victims of kush addiction.
The meeting, chaired by Acting Minister of Health Professor Dr. Charles Senesie and hosted by NPHA Executive Director Professor Foday Sahr, brought together key representatives from the health, security, education, youth, and civil society sectors. The gathering focused on restoring dignity and hope to affected individuals through coordinated national efforts.
Among the key decisions was the phased reopening of rehabilitation centres in Hastings and Gondama, alongside additional beds at the Kissy Psychiatric Hospital. The Task Force also endorsed the launch of a new facility in Daru, scheduled for next week.
To improve access, members proposed inclusive referral pathways involving community leaders, faith-based organizations, and youth networks, ensuring that support reaches those most in need. Mental health services will be integrated into all rehabilitation centres, with psychosocial support prioritized to address the emotional trauma linked to addiction.
A national dashboard is also in development to monitor admissions, recovery outcomes, and facility capacity. Officials say the tool will enhance transparency and guide future investments in the sector.
“Every young person caught in the grip of kush deserves a second chance and as a nation, we must be the hands that lift them,” said Professor Senesie
The meeting ended with a renewed sense of urgency and unity, as stakeholders pledged to confront the kush crisis with compassion, coordination, and resolve.
