Freetown, 1st October, 2025- Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara, Opposition Chief Whip in Parliament, has alleged that staff quarters belonging to Fourah Bay College are being put up for sale.

Speaking to Truth Media, Hon. Kamara described the alleged sale as “unacceptable,” warning that it could further erode the already strained learning environment at Sierra Leone’s oldest university. He claimed that the university administration is selling the quarters to former staff members, a move he says undermines public interest.

“These properties do not belong to individuals but to the state,” Kamara stated. “Selling them without a clear replacement plan reflects a dangerous lack of foresight and could set a precedent for mortgaging government assets.”

He called on relevant authorities to intervene and protect the integrity of the institution, especially as FBC prepares to celebrate its bicentenary.

In response, the FBC administration has categorically denied the allegations. In a statement issued by Dr. Tonya Musa, Director of Communications and International Relations at the University of Sierra Leone, the college dismissed the claims as “unfounded social media rumors.”

Instead, FBC highlighted a more pressing issue: land encroachment. Despite a High Court ruling in July 2024 affirming the college’s ownership of land at the Tree Planting Axis, the university has been unable to reclaim the property due to security concerns. The administration warned that continued encroachment threatens student safety, the historic Botanical Garden, and the water catchment area serving greater Freetown.

FBC has called on stakeholders to support the enforcement of the court order and safeguard the future of the institution.
