Washington, D.C. — President Julius Maada Bio on Tuesday met with US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau. The meeting was to strengthen bilateral ties and advance strategic cooperation between the United States and Sierra Leone.
The high-level meeting focused on expanding commercial engagement, with particular emphasis on the critical minerals sector. Both leaders also discussed regional security and border integrity, underscoring shared priorities in stability and economic development.
Following the talks, Deputy Secretary Landau witnessed the signing of a landmark agreement between the Government of Sierra Leone and U.S.-based firm Aton Path. The deal paves the way for the construction of a fuel depot and refinery in Sierra Leone, a move expected to boost the country’s energy infrastructure and attract further investment.
Landau commended President Bio on his recent appointment as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), noting Sierra Leone’s growing leadership role in regional affairs. He also reaffirmed U.S. support for the Millennium Challenge Corporation Sierra Leone Compact, which aims to expand access to affordable electricity across the country.
The meeting signals a renewed momentum in U.S.–Sierra Leone relations, with energy, governance and trade at the heart of future cooperation.
