The Sierra Leone Students Union in Korea elected a new executive committee on 17 September 2025, marking a renewed chapter of student-led engagement and community service under the dynamic leadership of Ambassador Paul Soba Massaquoi.

At the election, Michael Komba Smart was duly elected President of the Union. Joined in the executive by Benjamin Tibbie as Secretary General, Millicent Sandy as Finance Officer, and Alusine Wahab as Public Relations Officer. The new leadership team was selected in a vote that reflected broad participation among Sierra Leonean students studying across Korean universities.

The executives brings to the Union a strong record of student leadership and institutional experience. with credentials that position them to engage effectively with both Korean institutions and the broader student community.

The newly elected officers pledged to build on unity and to strengthen support systems for Sierra Leonean students in Korea, focusing on academic guidance, cultural integration, social welfare, and closer ties with diplomatic and educational partners. Under Ambassador Massaquoi’s guidance, the Union aims to deepen cooperation with the Sierra Leone embassy and relevant Korean institutions to enhance students’ educational and professional opportunities while abroad.

Community leaders and members of the Sierra Leonean diaspora in Korea welcomed the outcome of the elections and expressed optimism that the incoming executive will provide energetic representation and practical support for students navigating academic life and cross cultural adaptation.
The new team’s blend of student government experience, academic credentials, and language competence was widely seen as an asset for advocacy and outreach.

The Union’s leadership transition highlights the active role Sierra Leonean students in Korea play in fostering mutual understanding between the two countries, promoting educational excellence, and building networks that support students’ academic and career aspirations.
