23rd September 2026- Sierra Leone has reiterated its long‑standing position in favour of a two‑state solution to the Israel–Palestine conflict, with President Julius Maada Bio using his address at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly to reinforce the country’s stance.
Speaking during the General Debate under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All”, President Bio underscored Sierra Leone’s commitment to peace and justice in the Middle East.
“The inalienable right of the Palestinian people to self‑determination must be realised through a viable State of Palestine living alongside Israel in peace and security,” he declared to world leaders gathered in the UNGA Hall.
Sierra Leone’s position aligns with decades of international calls for a negotiated settlement that ensures both Israel’s security and Palestine’s sovereignty. By restating this principle at the UN’s most prominent forum, President Bio signalled Freetown’s continued engagement in global peacebuilding and its support for multilateral diplomacy.
The reaffirmation comes at a time when tensions in the region remain high, and the international community is once again grappling with how to advance dialogue between the two sides. Sierra Leone’s voice adds to the chorus of nations urging renewed efforts toward a lasting resolution.
