Freetown, 22nd October 2026- Sierra Leonean filmmakers have secured multiple awards at the Journey Home Film Festival and the Liberia Film Awards 2026, turning a trip marred by a reported mob attack in Monrovia into a celebration of the country’s growing cinematic talent.

The delegation reportedly lost an iPhone belonging to one of its members and US$2,300 in funds intended to support the trip during the incident in the Liberian capital.

Despite the setback, the filmmakers went on to earn major honours at both events, showcasing the creativity and resilience of Sierra Leone’s emerging film industry.

Among the notable successes was Money Sweet, which won Best International Film at both the Journey Home Film Festival 2026 and the Liberia Film Awards 2026, securing recognition at two separate regional platforms.

The film Stuck also enjoyed a successful outing. Its director, Zachariah Lloyd Sesay, won Best International Director at the Journey Home Film Festival, while the production secured the Best International Short Film award at the same event.

At the Liberia Film Awards, Mary Grace Fatoma was named Best International Actress for her performance in Stuck. Abdulai Saidu Kamara also received the Best International Actor award for his role in Glamour – Money Sweet.

Meanwhile, A Gift 4 Mary also received an award, adding to the delegation’s list of achievements in Liberia.

The awards highlight the growing visibility of Sierra Leonean filmmakers and their ability to compete on regional and international platforms. They also underscore the role of film festivals in creating opportunities for African filmmakers to showcase their work, build professional networks and exchange creative ideas.

Although the reported attack and loss of valuables and funds cast a shadow over the delegation’s visit, the awards provided a significant boost for the filmmakers and Sierra Leone’s film industry.

Their success in Liberia reinforces the potential of local cinema to tell compelling African stories, promote national culture and expand Sierra Leone’s presence in the regional entertainment industry.
