Freetown, 24th September 2026- President Julius Maada Bio has lauded First Lady Fatima Bio’s “unwavering determination and leadership” in the global fight against child, early, and forced marriage, as the United Nations General Assembly adopted a landmark resolution establishing an International Day dedicated to eliminating the practice.
Speaking at a high-level event marking the adoption, President Bio expressed Sierra Leone’s gratitude to the resolution’s co-sponsors, international partners, and civil society organizations whose advocacy helped secure the milestone. He described the declaration as a powerful step forward in protecting the rights of women and girls worldwide.
“Our work is far from over,” the President said, pledging continued support for the First Lady’s campaign. “We will stand with you, Fatima, as you promote advocacy for women and girls.”
The resolution, backed by broad international consensus, seeks to intensify global awareness and action against child marriage, a practice that undermines education, health, and equality for millions of girls. Sierra Leone’s leadership role in the initiative underscores the country’s growing commitment to advancing gender justice and safeguarding children’s futures.
