Freetown, 14th January 2026 – Health authorities have strongly refuted claims circulating on social media that an anthrax outbreak has been detected in Port Loko District.

An audio message widely shared online alleged that residents should avoid consuming meat due to an outbreak. However, the National Public Health Agency (NPHA), the Ministry of Health, and the Livestock Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security have categorically dismissed the claims as false and misleading.

According to the official statement, there is no confirmed or suspected anthrax outbreak in Port Loko District. “No official report or laboratory confirmation supports the claims being shared in the said audio message,” the release emphasized.

Authorities have urged the public to disregard the false message and avoid spreading unverified information that could cause unnecessary fear, panic, and economic disruption, particularly for those whose livelihoods depend on livestock and meat trade.

We encourage citizens to rely only on official government communication channels for accurate and timely public health updates,” the advisory stated.

The NPHA assured the public that routine disease surveillance continues across all districts to safeguard health and well-being. Officials pledged that any genuine public health concern would be promptly communicated through official channels.

Citizens are encouraged to report suspected health concerns to their nearest health facility, district health office, or through the NPHA hotline.

Anthrax, a serious bacterial disease affecting both animals and humans, has historically raised alarm when suspected. However, Sierra Leone’s health authorities stress that vigilance remains high and that misinformation should not be allowed to undermine public confidence or disrupt livelihoods.
