Freetown, 7th April 2026- The Freetown City Council (FCC), backed by Sierra Leone’s security forces, intensified its campaign for a cleaner capital on Saturday with a sweeping citywide operation and a public sensitization parade.

The initiative, carried out in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Police, the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, the Sierra Leone Correctional Service, and the National Fire Force, targeted high‑risk and high‑traffic areas across the municipality. Teams desilted gutters and drainage channels, cleared illegal dump sites under bridges and along road medians, swept major streets, and removed piles of accumulated waste. The National Fire Force washed down heavily littered areas, leaving immediate improvements in sanitation.

Inspector General of Police William Fayia Sellu joined the FCC float parade, reinforcing the message that civic responsibility and lawfulness are central to maintaining a clean city. His presence underscored the police’s role in enforcing the Frontage Cleanliness Byelaws and ensuring residents understand both their obligations and the consequences of non‑compliance.

SLPP councillors also played a visible role, engaging communities and supporting enforcement efforts throughout the day. Their participation, FCC noted, demonstrated a unified commitment to a healthier Freetown.

The Council’s Information, Education and Communication (IEC) Unit expanded outreach with door‑to‑door visits, handbill distribution, and direct engagement with households and shop owners. Public address systems, drama performances, and live demonstrations along the parade route, from Upgun to Wellington, drove home the importance of daily frontage cleaning and proper waste disposal. Chief Administrator Tom Farmar and his team led on‑the‑spot education and distributed copies of the public notice.

FCC officials reminded residents that enforcement is now fully active. Offenders caught dumping waste illegally, particularly along major routes such as Bai Bureh Road, face penalties of up to NLe 5,000, six months’ imprisonment, or both.

“A clean city begins with you,” the Council emphasized in its closing message. “Maintain your frontage. Dispose of waste properly. Respect public spaces.”
