Freetown, 13th March, 2026 – Sierra Leone’s main opposition party, the All People’s Congress (APC), has announced that its Members of Parliament and elected local government officials have unanimously endorsed the party leadership’s decision to withdraw from all engagements with the government, citing frustration over stalled electoral reforms.
The announcement followed two high-level consultative meetings held at the party’s headquarters on Old Railway Line, Freetown. On March 11, APC leaders met with sitting and nominated Members of Parliament whose names are currently under review by the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL). The following day, they convened with mayors, district council chairpersons, councillors, and nominated councillors from across the country.
According to the party secretariat, both meetings were marked by “frank, responsible, and comradely deliberations” and reflected the APC’s tradition of consultation and unity. Delegates reaffirmed their loyalty to the party leadership and their readiness to stand firmly behind the decision to disengage from government processes.
The APC leadership explained that the move was driven by the government’s “continued lack of demonstrable commitment” to implementing the recommendations of the Tripartite Committee reforms designed to enhance the credibility of future elections.
“The events surrounding the 2023 elections remain a painful reminder of how the will of the people can be undermined when electoral processes are manipulated,” the party stated, adding that genuine reforms anchored in the Tripartite Committee’s recommendations are indispensable to restoring public confidence in Sierra Leone’s democracy.
In what the party described as a powerful demonstration of solidarity, APC MPs, mayors, council chairpersons, and councillors collectively endorsed the leadership’s stance. The party emphasized that the decision reflects the determination of Sierra Leoneans to ensure that “the sovereign mandate of the people must never again be stolen or subverted.”
The APC also commended its elected representatives for their discipline and comradeship, stressing that their collective position underscores the party’s strength as a principled institution committed to defending democratic accountability.
The leadership urged members, supporters, and well-wishers at home and abroad to remain calm and united as the party pursues lawful and democratic avenues to protect the people’s mandate. Further updates, it said, will be communicated through official party channels.
