Freetown, 3rd August, 2026- The All People’s Congress (APC) has publicly commended its parliamentary leadership and Members of Parliament for what it described as “patriotism, maturity, discipline and principled leadership” during ongoing debates on the Constitution of Sierra Leone (Amendment) Bill.
In a statement by National Publicity Secretary Sidi Yayah Tunis, the party praised its MPs for conducting themselves with dignity and restraint despite what it called “extraordinary pressure and significant temptations.” The APC urged its representatives to remain steadfast, insisting that the trust reposed in them by the electorate must not be exchanged for “transient personal gain.”
The party reaffirmed its support for several provisions in the Bill, including the recognition of dual citizenship for Sierra Leoneans in the diaspora and the minimum 30% representation for women in governance and public decision‑making.
“These are important reforms that enjoy broad national appeal and deserve serious consideration,” the statement noted.
However, the APC maintained its strong opposition to proposals introducing Proportional Representation (PR) as the new electoral system for parliamentary elections and altering thresholds for presidential elections.
The party argued that the First‑Past‑the‑Post (FPTP) system remains the preferred choice of the broader public, citing nationwide consultations where Paramount Chiefs, the Inter‑Religious Council, and civil society groups expressed support for retaining FPTP.
“Constitutional reform should unite the nation through consensus rather than divide it over a single contentious provision,” the APC stressed.
The statement concluded with a call for dialogue and consensus‑building, urging all stakeholders to pursue reforms that strengthen democratic choice, safeguard public confidence, and promote national cohesion.
The APC saluted its MPs for their “discipline, courage and fidelity to the Constitution,” adding that posterity will remember those who chose principle over expediency.
