Freetown, 5th September 2025- The Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU) has confirmed that its planned strike action will go ahead on Monday, 8th September, after negotiations with government officials failed to yield results.

Speaking on the Truth Morning Devotion, Foday Kuyateh, SLTU Regional Secretary for the Western Region, said the Union’s concerns remain unresolved.

“We have not resolved the issues and the strike action will go as planned,” he stated.

According to Kuyateh, 1,800 genuine teachers’ names were wrongly removed during the recent verification exercise, while the government still owes schools 110 billion old Leones in subsidies.

“The ones who did the verification did not do a good job,” he added, stressing that without subsidies, schools cannot run effectively.

The Union says it has held meetings with the Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, but has not engaged directly with the Vice President as claimed in a press statement from the Basic and Senior Secondary Education Ministry.

“We have not made any progress in our negotiations,” Kuyateh emphasised.
