Freetown, 8th September, 2026 – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has praised the Government of Sierra Leone for facilitating the return of former President Ernest Bai Koroma, describing the move as a significant step toward reconciliation and lasting peace.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the regional bloc commended President Julius Maada Bio for his leadership in ensuring Koroma’s safe return to Freetown. The development follows the government’s decision to archive charges against the former president in the interest of national unity, reconciliation, and peacebuilding.
ECOWAS also expressed gratitude to regional leaders, particularly President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria, for his role in supporting the process and welcoming Koroma back to Sierra Leone.
The Commission noted that the gesture reflects Sierra Leone’s commitment to strengthening democratic stability and fostering cohesion at a time when dialogue and reconciliation remain critical to the country’s political landscape.
