Freetown, 10th August, 2026– Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, has issued a message of appreciation to Members of Parliament, praising their unity and courage in standing firmly for the people and in what he considers ‘defense of Sierra Leone’s Constitution’.
Kargbo described the recent parliamentary stand as “one of the finest opportunities we, as Members of Parliament, have had to stand firmly for the people and in defence of the Constitution of Sierra Leone.”
Addressing MPs, particularly those on the opposition side, Kargbo commended them for demonstrating loyalty to the people and commitment to constitutional principles.
“Today, you stood together. You demonstrated unity. You demonstrated courage. And, most importantly, you sent a very strong message to the nation that no force can divide us when we stand together for what is right, for the people, and for the Constitution,” he said.
He stressed that Parliamentarians must never become part of any procedure that undermines the Constitution, reminding colleagues that the Constitution is the supreme legal framework of the nation.
Kargbo emphasized the importance of adhering to constitutional provisions, particularly the requirement of a two‑thirds majority for amendments. “Where the Constitution requires a two‑thirds majority for an amendment, it is our responsibility as Parliamentarians to ensure that the constitutional requirement is respected and fully complied with,” he noted.
He described the collective stand taken by MPs as a powerful message to the nation, reinforcing that “no force can divide us when we stand together for the people and for the Constitution.”
As Parliament goes into recess, Kargbo clarified that the opposition did not boycott Parliament. “We did not boycott Parliament. Our position was a principled one. We stood against what we believe was a procedurally unconstitutional attempt to amend the Constitution, and we did so to ensure that the constitutional requirements governing amendments are respected,” he explained.
He insisted that the action was not intended to undermine Parliament but to defend its integrity and the Constitution that gives it authority.
Kargbo expressed confidence that when Parliament reconvenes in October, all Honourable Members will return in full force to continue representing the people of Sierra Leone.
“We stand together. We remain united. And we will continue to stand for the people, for democracy, and for the Constitution of Sierra Leone,” he affirmed.
In closing, the Opposition Leader extended gratitude to MPs for their courage, unity, and commitment to democratic principles: “To all Honourable Members, I say thank you, thank you, thank you for standing firm.”
