Freetown, 31st July, 2026– The Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) has announced the immediate closure of the Old Railway Line Bridge at Brookfields, Freetown, effective August 1, 2026, following expert inspections that revealed severe structural deterioration.
According to the SLRA, critical elements of the bridge have weakened to the point of posing a serious risk to public safety. The Authority emphasized that the closure is a precautionary measure aimed at safeguarding lives and property, pending rehabilitation or full reconstruction works.
“The bridge is no longer suitable for use in its current state,” the SLRA said in a statement, noting that restoration efforts will focus on ensuring the structure is safe, serviceable, and fit for purpose.
Motorists and pedestrians are advised to comply with traffic control measures and use designated alternative routes. The Sierra Leone Police, the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority, and other relevant agencies will oversee traffic management and enforce the closure.
The SLRA expressed regret over the inconvenience caused but appealed for public understanding and cooperation. “We appreciate the patience of the public as we work to restore this vital infrastructure,” the statement added.
The Old Railway Line Bridge, a key link in the Brookfields area, has long been a busy thoroughfare. Its closure is expected to significantly affect traffic flow in central Freetown until rehabilitation works are completed.
