Freetown, 29th July, 2026– The Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs has issued a rallying call to women and women-led organizations across Sierra Leone to unite behind the Proposed Constitutional Amendment Bill, describing it as a defining moment in the nation’s pursuit of gender equality.
The legislation, currently under consideration, seeks to strengthen women’s rights, expand protections, and guarantee meaningful participation in leadership and decision-making. It consolidates years of advocacy under the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) agenda, promising increased representation of women in politics and greater involvement in both public and private institutions.
The Bill is expected to reinforce constitutional provisions that support women’s political participation, particularly through the Proportional Representation (PR) system. By creating more opportunities for women to be elected, the amendment aims to ensure that women’s voices are better reflected in democratic institutions and national decision-making.
“This is a defining moment for our nation. Together, let us support this process, raise our voices, and make history by building a more inclusive, equitable, and representative Sierra Leone for present and future generations,” the Minister declared.
The Minister emphasized that the Bill is not just about legal reform but about reshaping Sierra Leone’s future. She urged citizens to stand together in support of the amendment, stressing that every woman deserves an equal opportunity to lead, participate, and thrive.
“Together, let us support the Proposed Constitutional Amendment Bill and continue building a Sierra Leone where every woman has an equal opportunity to lead, participate, and thrive,” she added.
