Freetown, 27th July, 2026 – The Office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice has wrapped up the investigation and prosecution phase of national consultations on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), following engagements with stakeholders in Makeni, Bo, and Freetown.
FGM remains one of Sierra Leone’s most complex challenges, intersecting with issues of law, public health, child protection, culture, gender, and human rights. Recognising these sensitivities, government has adopted an inclusive, evidence-based approach to guide policy and legislative decisions.
Officials stressed that the perspectives of investigators and prosecutors are vital contributions to the broader national dialogue. The next phase will expand consultations to ensure that all relevant stakeholders have the opportunity to be heard.
While discussions remain open, government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting women and girls from violence, safeguarding children’s rights, and promoting justice, dignity, and public health. Any eventual decisions, authorities said, will be guided by evidence, informed by Sierra Leonean voices, and grounded in constitutional and international obligations.
